Step 1: Find the ‘GraphicsRules.sgr’ file

This file is located in the Sims 4 installation folder and NOT in the Sims 4 folder in documents. To find this file, do the following:

For mac users: Go to Macintosh HD/Users/[User Name]/Applications/The Sims 4

Right-click on The Sims 4 and select ‘Show Package Contents’. There will typically be one folder in here called ‘Contents’. In the Contents folder, you have to go to ‘Resources’, and the ‘GraphicsRules.sgr’ file will be there.

For Windows users: Go to Program Files(x86)/Origin Games/The Sims 4/Game/Bin. The ‘GraphicsRules.sgr’ file will be there.

Step 2: Edit the ‘GraphicsRules.sgr’ file

Once you found the ‘GraphicsRules.sgr’ file, make a backup copy of it anywhere on your PC, just for in case. Once you’ve done that, you can open the ‘GraphicsRules.sgr’ file (the one in your game folder, not the backup) with any text editor. Use the search function (CTRL + F) to find ‘LightingQuality’. There will be a few of them, so make sure you go to the section called ‘option LightingQuality’ and not the section ‘option VisualQuality’. Scroll down to the setting you use in-game; for example, I use very high. Find the line that says ‘prop $ConfigGroup SsaoEnable true’ and change the ‘true’ to ‘false’.
