EA releases an update for the Sims 4 every so often – whether it is to fix bugs or to bring some new additions to the game, updates are sure to always be there. BUT every update brings with it the potential to crash your game or corrupt your save files. That is why you should always follow the guidelines below to prevent such horrors from occurring.
What to do before updating:
BEFORE you update the game, make sure to do the following:
- Backup your save files and tray files, just in case. You can do this by going to Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 and making a copy of both the “saves” and “tray” folders.

- Move the entire “mods” folder out of the sims 4 folder.

What to do after updating:
Now you can go ahead and update your game, but DO NOT run the game yet. Before running the game after the update, you must first update all your mods. You have to check where they were downloaded from initially and make sure there is an update. This is why it is a good idea to keep track of all the mods you add to your game. Of course, some of the mods you use might not have an update immediately. You should wait and try to play without these mods until an update is available – playing with outdated mods can completely ruin your game! It is also possible that not all mods need updates, so be sure to check out on the download link whether the specific mod even needs an update at all.
Once you are sure that you have updated all mods, you can put your mods folder back where you found it (namely Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4)
